Lech Walesa was employed as an electrician in the shipyards of Gdansk when he began organizing union workers, for which he was detained by Polish authorities. He eventually led shipyard strikes and rose to become the leader of the trade union Solidarity, which was a cornerstone in the fight for freedom for workers across Eastern Europe.
